Principal Investigator
Dr. Shaffer is an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Houston. His research is focused on membrane separations for water purification and for chemical separations. Currently, he investigates new membrane materials with tailored separation properties for applications in desalination to purify drinking water, membrane distillation to treat high-salinity brines, and organic solvent separations. Dr. Shaffer is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award to study covalent organic framework membranes for liquid separations. Prior to joining UH, he earned his PhD in environmental engineering at Yale University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship as a materials research engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
